Map of Baghdad Under the ʿAbbasid Caliphate

The source of both these maps in G. Le Strange, Baghdad Under the ʿAbbasid Caliphate (Oxford, 1900) which are also reproduced and discussed in J. Lassner, The Topography of Bagdad in the Early Middle Ages (Detroit, 1970), 199-204. Early Baghdad is a “virtual city” in that the plans can only be reconstructed from literary sources and these can be understood very differently. For an alternative interpretation see A. A. Duri, “Baghdad” in Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition.
